A Berklee study found that 20-50% of royalties never make it into the artist’s pocket, mainly because artists don't know where or how to claim their funds! The Power Of Your Heart's Desire

“I saw HER on stage and I just had this feeling. I think too many aspiring singers forget the power of their heart's desire and leaning into it,” I said today to a new client who just left her computer software job to do music full-time. We're already planning her live show for next spring, stacking her calendar with rehearsals, songwriting and spending time in the studio making music love. I continued, “One of the best things I've learned lately is to earnestly desire and expect things we want in our heart NOW. Not fills our minds with doubt/fear thoughts that only force us to wait to be happier and take action.” Do you do that too?

Date Your Inner Artist

Have you ever been on an Artist Date? The Artist Date idea is something I LOVE that came from the book, 'The Artist's Way' by Julia Cameron--which btw is incredible and you should totally read it! It's about making time for yourself, once a week, on your own, to do something 'enchanting'. To play, have fun or do something that nourishes you as an artist. Years ago I took and assisted in several Artist's Way courses in LA, and ever since I've dedicated some of my weekend to getting in an Artist Date!

MAKE YOUR COMPETITION IRRELEVANT

Playing the comparison game? Any guesses on how to smash your competition? In the past, I would copy or try to compete--I'd scour the #vocalcoach and #artistdevelopment hashtags on IG. Then I learned that you'll always LOSE at the comparison game, soo STOP playing it! Don't copy or compete--create something NEW and soo uniquely YOU that it makes competition irrelevant!

WORKING WITH A MANAGER IN 2020

Two decades ago, I had a "Momager". As a singer, I was fortunate to focus entirely on growing my craft, rehearsing-writing-performing, because everything else was taken care of for me! (booking gigs, PR and being supported financially). I got booked multiple shows a week and then I was approached by a producer backstage. We signed my first recording contract, and I officially had "Producer Manager". In 2005, my then producer became "Boyfriend Manager" and together we learned about royalties, getting music licensed to TV + Film, plus how much more there was to the industry than just singing.

Define Your MicroGenre

But the best thing to happen to me on this singing journey was an embarrassing moment at an audition that shook me into finally taking myself seriously, which suggested I make a decision. The decision I made was to commit to finding my own unique artistic identity. To stop singing everything and hone in on my own niche! If you want to become a great artist and have a lasting music career, you've got to know who you are, what your personality is and most importantly what (micro) genre of music best suits you. There are 1000+ booming microgenres out there; where do you fit in?

Secret Weapon For Healthy Voices

For my aspiring singers and fellow coaches, this is your secret weapon for crafting healthy voices: Trade the steam room for a nebulizer, and getting HYDRATED with my beloved pocket-sized, low maintenance VocalMist. The thing is, “the vocal folds need to be lubricated with a thin layer of mucous in order to vibrate efficiently.” Dehydration causes the voice to lose vocal cord flexibility and become more susceptible to damage! It causes the mucous to thicken and leads to irritation, the start of vocal injury and inferior singing quality.
